Work Package 6

The objective of this WP is to produce detailed manufacturing guidelines for the preparation of dissimilar material joints (both metal and metal/composite) exhibiting optimum performance, as well as details of the inspection procedures for quality control and through service.

Task 6.1 – Manufacturing procedures for dissimilar metals

This task will undertake the compilation of a report providing details of the manufacturing approach to be undertaken for the manufacture of dissimilar metal joints containing CNT additives, and details of the parameters influencing the strength of the joint. The task will also undertake the activities for up-scaling of the modified FSW process to produce large panels for a range of industrial applications.

Task 6.2 – Manufacturing procedures for metal/composite joints

This task will undertake the compilation of a report providing details of the manufacturing approach to be undertaken for the manufacture of metal/composite joints, and details of the parameters influencing the strength of the joint. The task will also undertake the activities for up-scaling of the modified FSW process to produce large panels for a range of industrial applications. The up-scaling work will also be providing information for the built of a demonstrator.

Task 6.3 – NDE procedures and guidelines for inspection at build and service health monitoring

Following on from the detailed NDE studies of joints pre and post testing, the information will be compiled in the form of a document describing the procedures for inspection of samples including the types of probes required and equipment settings for enhanced sensitivity to detected flaws. The work will also provide the guidelines for service health monitoring and the inspection strategies that should be followed to ensure the safe operation of hybrid structures.
